Description

The wall enclosing a garden to the north, west, and south of Rochford Hall dates from the 16th century and has undergone later repairs. It is constructed of red brick with some black diapering in English bond. The southeast face runs parallel to Rochford Hall Drive and is approximately 2 to 3 meters high. Attached to this section of the wall are two later barns that face the garden; these barns are timber framed at the front and returns, with the wall serving as their rear walls. The southern barn features a red tiled and corrugated asbestos-clad roof, an aisle on the west face, straight braces to the top plate, and some hanging knees to the tie beams, with internal boarding. The northern barn is weatherboarded and has a red plain tiled roof. Near the northeastern angle, there is a small gateway. The northern wall, which runs parallel with Hall Road, is the tallest section at over 3 meters and, despite being covered by climbers and shrubs, shows much of the black diapering. Off-center to the east of the northern face is a southern spur wall that may have been connected to the now-ruined northwestern turret of the Hall. The southwestern face is also 2 to 3 meters tall. The southwestern angle is located south of the Hall, and the southern face has two sections that angle further south, terminating to the south of the Hall. There are carriageways through the wall to the north and south. The entire enclosed area is said to be approximately 8 acres.
