Description

Doggetts Farmhouse is a house that dates from the early 19th century but has origins from the 16th century or earlier. It features a front range made of gault brick and a hipped roof covered with red plain tiles. There is a 16th-century red brick external chimney stack on the left return, positioned off centre to the right, along with three chimney stacks at the rear. The building is two storeys high with a parapet and has a four-window range of tripartite small paned vertically sliding sashes with segmental heads. The entrance, located off centre to the right, consists of a three-panelled door topped with an oval fanlight, a flat canopy, and side lights. The right return also has a three-window range similar to the front.

Inside, there are vertical shutters in one room, six cast iron fire surrounds in the upstairs rooms and landing, including a very small, narrow surround with a round head that may have been used for warming pans. There is an 18th-century panelled overmantel and a side cupboard with three shelves. A 19th-century W.C. features a wooden bench seat, and there is a 19th-century archway and cornice in the hall. The staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, and the doors are six-panelled with moulded surrounds. In the kitchen on the left, there is an original 16th-century stone fire surround with a stop-chamfered arch, which has scratch dates and names inscribed on the stone, including one that reads "Rebecca Rake 1595." The frame of the original building is mostly covered, but some heavy wall studs near the chimney stack have recently been exposed.

Historically, Philip Morant noted that the farmhouse was associated with an ancient family, with records dating back to 1305 when Robert Doggett and his wife Alice held a messuage and 26 acres of arable land purchased by Beatrix Doggett. By 1619, it belonged to Robert Earl of Warwick. L.E. Jerram-Burrows documented that the property was purchased in 1867 by William Taylor Meeson from the then Lord of the Manor.
