Description
Rochford Hospital Boiler House is a boiler house built around 1935 and completed by 1945-6, designed by F W Smith. It is constructed of brick in English bond and features many original metal-flamed windows. The building has a flat roof, and there are single-storey ancillary buildings with rectangular and square plans that cluster around the base of the tall boiler house. The boiler house is characterized by three tiers of differently sized windows, with a five-window range on the long elevations and a one-window range on the returns. A low, plinth-like structure at the roof serves as a base for the cylindrical stack. The design reflects the influence of Scandinavian Modernism, particularly the work of J G Asplund. This building forms a group with the Administration and Johnson Blocks to the south.
