Description

Roach Farmhouse is a mid-16th century house located on Mucking Hall Road, Barling Magna. The house was undergoing restoration at the time of its resurvey. It is timber framed and was originally weatherboarded, with some brick additions. The roof was originally tiled, with plain and fish-scale tiles and a crested ridge. A large central chimney stack of red brick is a prominent feature. The house displays a baffle entry and rises to two storeys and attics. A central gabled porch, two stories high, is present. The ground floor includes a cambered mantel beam and a cast iron firesurround with a semi-circular arch. There are two original first-floor brick fireplaces with wide chamfered arches, one with an inserted ornate cast iron hob grate. A staircase with stick balusters is located near the chimney. The construction incorporates through bracing to some walls, a side purlin roof pegged at the ridge, intermittent collars, jowled storey posts, and haunched soffit tenons to the floor joists.
