Description

The wall enclosing Braxted Park, built between 1825 and 1831 for Peter Du Cane, is a park wall made of red brick with moulded coping, primarily stepped, and constructed in Flemish bond. It varies in height from approximately 3 to 4 metres and has a circumference of about 4.5 miles. The wall runs along Braxted Park Road to the south, Kelvedon Road to the west, and Pundicts Lodge track to the east, returning to Kelvedon Road. Construction began in 1825 at the northwest angle near Kelvedon Lodge. The building phases are marked by stone plaques embedded in the wall, such as one inscribed "P. D.-1825."

Nearby features include Kelvedon Lodge and entrance gates, Witham Lodge at the southwest angle, and entrance lodges numbered 1 and 2, with numbers 3 and 4 located on the opposite side of Braxted Park Road. The entrance gates to Great Braxted Church are made of wrought iron and have side panels supported by square brick pillars with plain stone capping. Although a plaque on the wall is dated 1827, the gates and pillars seem to be from a later period. The southeast entrance gateway features tall square red brick pillars with moulded stone capping topped with lidded urn finials dated 1828 and 1830. The new entrance to Pundicts Lodge includes large ball finials on brick pillars and tall arrowhead rails and gates. This wall is a rare and high-quality example in Essex, reflecting the status of the Du Cane family at Braxted Park during the 19th century. Peter Du Cane relocated houses from near Great Braxted Church to Bung Row, thus enclosing only the Church within this area of the park.
