Description

The Old School House and outbuilding is a former schoolmaster's house, now a residential property, dating from the late 18th century, with a late 19th-century addition made when it was converted for school use. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring yellow brick banding on the Victorian addition, and has old tile pitched roofs. Originally a two-bay lobby-entry house, it now has its entrance in an attached Victorian porch and wing, with an outbuilding located to the northeast of a shared yard.

On the north elevation, there is an advanced gabled wing with yellow brick banding and a cross, along with two-paned windows and a lateral chimneystack. To the right is the entrance porch, which has similar detailing. Behind this is the 18th-century house featuring a central lateral chimneystack. The south elevation has two window bays under segmental arches, with 8-over-8 paned windows, the ground floor windows being taller. The left bay includes a secondary entrance below a blind opening. The east elevation has a brick section at the bottom right dated 1775 with initials. The school is attached to the west end but is not included in the listing.

Inside, the ground floor has chamfered beams with stops in both original rooms, an open fireplace, and several original doors and cupboards. The entrance corridor features a red and black Victorian tiled floor. The first floor contains two rooms with chamfered beams, panelled partitions, and two-panel doors with strap hinges, including several cupboard doors. The hall has a light scantling beaded stud wall, chimney massing, a two-panel cupboard door, and a stick balustrade with chamfered newels. A steep straight stair, framed with chamfered studs, leads to the attic, which has beaded plank doors and cupboard doors with strap hinges.

To the northeast, there is a single-storey late 19th-century outbuilding that features similar yellow brick banding, three rounded arches (two of which are blind flanking an opening), and an oculus on the north gable with bargeboards on brackets. It has five plank doors facing the shared yard.

This building is an intact late 18th-century house, enhanced by a pleasantly detailed Victorian extension that served the adjacent school.
