Description

Wickham Hall is a manor house, likely dating back to the 16th century or earlier, with significant alterations and additions made in the 18th century and later. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a red brick facade incorporating black headers, dating from the 18th century. The roofs are covered with red plain tiles, arranged in a double range with various hipped roofs to the left and rear, and are punctuated by four red brick chimney stacks, one featuring diagonal shafts.

The main range is two storeys and attics, with two gables. It has a symmetrical arrangement of windows; two in each gable, three on the first floor, and two on the ground floor. All the windows are vertically sliding sash windows with glazing bars and horns. A central, 19th-century open porch supported by timber is present, sheltering a six-panelled door with coloured glass margins, a moulded surround, frieze panels, and reveal panels. A single-storey range to the left is hipped and features two windows.

Inside, notable features include a stick staircase and stop-chamfered bridging joists. A diamond-leaded window, containing eleven pieces of medieval stained glass—ten depicting birds and one a tree—is present, although it is not in its original location and has been recorded since the 18th century. The house was formerly a palace belonging to the Bishops of London. Evidence suggests that remnants of older buildings may lie beneath the existing decoration. The site is also characterized by a moat.
