Description
This is a barley barn and cartlodge, originally part of the Woodham Mortimer Lodge complex, located approximately 40 metres west of the lodge. The barn dates to 1827 and is constructed of red brick with a grey slate roof. It features two gabled midstreys with vertically boarded double doors facing east. The barn has a 2:4 bay arrangement with recessed arches, each featuring a diagonal brick ventilator pattern. Original grey slate granary outshots are present on the east face, with brick airing arches underneath. An original copper damp proof course is also present. Recessed arches with brick ventilators are found on the side and rear elevations, while stone panels are in the right and left return gables. The right gable panel commemorates the barn's rebuilding in 1827 following a fire in 1826, attributed to J.C.G. Inside, the barn has a boarded side purlin roof with braces to the collars and king posts above. Attached to the left return is a 7-bay cartlodge constructed of similar materials, and it has stop-chamfered timber support posts and cast iron hanging knees.
