Description

Cromwell Lodge is a house built around 1840. It features a timber frame with a rendered finish and white weatherboarding on the south-west flank and rear. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, accented by red ridge and hip tiles. The building is arranged in an L-shape, enclosing a yard on the north-east side.

The house has two storeys and a four-window range. The first floor of the front elevation includes sash windows with moulded surrounds and margin glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is a doorcase supported by Doric pilasters, topped with a flat cornice and a margin-glazed rectangular fanlight. The door itself has two long vertical moulded panels. There is one additional sash window similar to the others, as well as French windows with sidelights and four panes of glass above the transom. A door leads to the yard passage.

The weatherboarded south-west elevation features two 16-pane sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor has a door, one 16-pane sash window, and one margin-glazed sash window. The rear elevation mirrors the front with two margin-glazed sash windows above central French windows. The yard elevation has two margin-glazed sash windows above a very large square sash window with small Gothick arched panes.

Inside, the lodge retains many contemporary doors and fittings, including a central hall with a stick-baluster staircase that has shaped tread ends and hardwood handrails, supported by a bulbous early Victorian-looking newel.
