Description
This is a public pump located to the north-east of Number 3B on Cromwell Hill, built in 1805. It features a tall cast-iron pump shaft with a spout, although the handle is missing. The pump stands on a rectangular stone platform with a brick plinth and a stone slab covering the well. It is enclosed by a granite kerb along the street and has a retaining wall with a steeply raking top and a curved corner to the north. To the south-west, there is a lower part of a square brick chamber with a stepped opening facing the street. Historically, this pump is situated on the site of a 16th-century pump provided by Thomas Cannock in 1587, which conveyed water through lead conduits from Little Cromwell. A stone oval plaque, now in the town museum, is a relic of this site and is inscribed: 'RESTORED CC WESTON ESQ 1748'.
