Description
The Cromwell Guest House is an early 19th-century guest house with earlier timber-framed elements. It comprises two blocks with differing roof materials: the south-east block has a Welsh slate roof, hipped to Cromwell Hill and gabled to the rear, while the north-west block has a clay pantiled roof.
The south-east front features wide, overhanging eaves. The first floor has two 12-pane sash windows with moulded surrounds, while the ground floor displays an early 19th-century shop front with a projecting cornice and a frieze decorated with a fan motif over four reeded Doric pilasters. The central door has six raised fielded panels and a fanlight. Beside the door are tripartite shop-type windows with a vertical glazing bar in the central light. This shop front returns for one bay onto Cromwell Lane, where the frontage is three storeys high. On the second floor are three 12-pane sash windows with moulded surrounds; the first floor has two recessed 12-pane sash windows, and the ground floor contains a recessed two-light window and a low double door. The rear block has a gabled dormer with a 20th-century two-light window and two flush 16-pane sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor features a fascia above a recessed door with a margin-glazed fanlight and a recessed 12-pane sash window. To the north-west are a wide pair of boarded doors above an area of black weatherboarding.
The building's interior is complex, reflecting many periods of construction. The south-west flank of the front block exhibits framing with internal curved wall bracing to a central strut.
