Description
This village pump, located approximately 2 metres west of Goldsands Road, dates from around 1832 and was designed by engineer John Richmond. It is made of cast iron and features an obelisk shape standing on a base. The sides of the obelisk are tapering and panelled, topped with a hipped head and an acorn finial. The front panels have moulded inscriptions that read "Erected by The Governors of The Charter House, March 1832, and, Richmond and Son Engineers, Chelmsford." There is a large plain spout on the upper front panel, supported by ties and a central ring, and a curved handle on the upper right panel. This pump is significant as the only known identifiable casting from the Richmond Foundry and is one of only two surviving obelisks, the other being from around 1850 at Ridgewell.
