Description
The grain drying unit at Southminster Hall Farm dates from the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, featuring gault brick window and door dressings. The building has a double range roof with a central gabled hoist loft above three storeys and a hoist loft, along with two single-storey eastern ranges. The structure includes gault brick central and corner pilasters and has round-headed window openings in the gables.
On the west face, there are two segmental-headed window openings on the first floor and a segmental-headed doorway on the ground floor to the left. The south face features a gabled and weatherboarded hoist loft, with a sliding door on the left side of the first floor and a segmental-headed window opening below it. To the right, there are two blocked segmental-headed windows on the first and second floors, along with three round-headed doors at ground level.
The north face has a tall square-headed opening on the left and a round-headed doorway on the right with a horizontal opening above. Attached to the east face are two single-storey gabled ranges; the southern one is derelict, while the other has a central round-headed doorway and a round-headed window opening above. The roof structure features king post construction, and this range is sooted internally, suggesting it may have been a boiler house.
There is a large segmental-headed archway through the central red brick partition wall of the main range. Inside, a moulded cast iron plaque on the north wall indicates that the grain drying and cleaning plant was manufactured by E.R. & F. Turner Ltd. from Foxhall Works, Ipswich.
