Description

House. The building incorporates extensive remains of a probable aisled hall dating back to the 13th century. A crown post roof was inserted in the 14th century. Later elements originate from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a 20th-century single-storey extension located to the left and forward of a gabled crosswing at the rear. The structure is timber framed and rough rendered, with the south elevation featuring brickwork in a Flemish bond pattern. The roofs are covered in plain red tiles. A prominent red brick chimney stack is located on the main right-hand range. The façade has a 1:2 window arrangement, featuring 3-light casements with central transoms on the first floor, and small-paned vertically sliding sash windows on the ground floor. A doorway to the right of the crosswing is characterised by fluted pilasters and a dentilled open pediment. The roof displays heavy soot blackening. Each rafter pair has soulace-pieces with refined entry notch lapped joints. The central truss incorporates partially passing braces, and the “low end” features a hipped roof extending beyond a closed truss, whose details are comparable to those found at Fyfield Hall, Essex. A blackened early 14th-century crown post remains, along with some surviving jowled crownposts and a substantial collar purlin.
