Description
Monk's House is a house dating from 1792. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with timber framing and plaster, and has a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The house is arranged in a T-shape, facing southwest. It has external brick stacks at each end of the main range, and an internal stack in the two-storey service range at the rear. A single-storey extension from the 19th century projects beyond, with a hipped roof. The main range is two storeys high with attics, while the service range is two storeys high. On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century square bay window, and a late 19th-century sash window with six lights. The first floor features two original sashes with 16 lights each, and a central original sash with 12 lights. The attic has two 19th-century casement windows within gabled dormers. The central entrance has a six-panel door, a fanlight with curved tracery, and a doorcase with an open pediment, triglyphs, and guttae. The ground floor is brick, with plaster above. A recessed panel on the left return stack is inscribed “E.M. 1792”. The house is associated with General Monk.
