Description

Bacons is a house that dates from the 16th or 17th century, with later alterations and additions. The front range is made of early 19th century red brick, while the attached rear range is also red brick and dates from the 17th century or earlier. The building has a hipped grey slate roof and features 19th century red brick chimney stacks on both the left and right sides, along with two repaired 17th century or earlier red brick stacks at the rear.

The house is two storeys tall, with a three-window range on the first floor and a two-window range on the ground floor, all featuring tripartite small-paned vertically sliding sashes with segmental heads, except for a single light above the central doorway. There is a stepped approach leading to an Ionic portico that has two columns and two pilasters, a flat canopy with a panelled soffit, reveal panels at the doorway, and a panelled door with top lights.

Inside, notable features include large stop-chamfered bridging joists and stop-chamfered storey posts. The rear right room has exposed 16th or 17th century chamfered and splayed red brick window jambs. There is also an open string staircase with two turned balusters on each tread and a 18th century corner cupboard. Bacons is one of the two original manors of Dengie and is named after Gilbert Bacon, who obtained a licence to build a Free Chapel here in 1282. Lord Petre was the Lord of the Manor in 1912, according to Kelly's Directory.
