Description
Dengie Manor is a house with origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier for the rear ranges, while the front range is from the 18th century. The building features a mix of timber framing and plaster, along with painted brick. The front range has a hipped and sprocketed red plain tiled roof with projecting eaves and is flanked by red brick chimney stacks. It stands at two storeys with attics and includes three gabled dormers with 19th-century two-light casements. The first floor has two small paned vertically sliding sashes with shutters, and there are two angled bays adorned with dentilled and moulded cornices, with windows matching those on the first floor.
On the left return, there is a central first floor window with shutters, pilasters, and a moulded flat canopy supported by brackets over the central doorway. The door features a small paned top light and is accessed by a flight of steps with ornate iron railings and S-shaped balusters. Inside, the manor includes panelled doors, two fluted columns in the hall, and a fine stick baluster staircase. The rear left section is a single-storey range made of painted brick, with a weatherboarded return. It has a panelled door to the left and a range of four windows with small paned vertically sliding sashes. The house served as the seat of the Fanshawe family from the 16th century until 1927, including notable figures such as Thomas, 1st and 2nd Lord Fanshawe, and Sir Henry Fanshawe, who lived from 1569 to 1616.
