Description
Bacons is a cottage dating from the 15th or 16th century, with later alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It has a timber-framed and plastered structure, with the rear featuring a rendered surface decorated with cockleshells, attributed to E.G. The roof is a red plain tiled gambrel style, with an outshot to the center and a forward gambrelled wing to the right. There are central and right red brick chimney stacks. The building is one storey with attics and has a 2:1 window arrangement of 20th-century leaded casements. A dormer on the left features a vertically sliding sash window, and there are 20th-century doors to the left and in the outshot's left return. A Sun Insurance plaque is located on the return gable. Inside, notable features include stop-chamfered bridging joists, heavy close-set wall studs, and re-used medieval timber. There is a three-board door, moulded rails and muntins, and a restored inglenook fireplace. Additionally, there are two panelled corner cupboards, one with a painted vault and fluted side pilasters, and the other with guilloche edging. Originally named Pilton Manor, the site was moated, and part of the moat remains.
