Description

Garwood Cottages is an early 16th-century house. It was originally timber framed and subsequently plastered, with a red plain tile hipped roof. The house has two storeys and originally featured a four-window range of windows, now replaced with 20th-century casements. A 16th-century red brick chimney stack has been partly rebuilt. The timber frame is exposed internally, revealing storey posts with jowls and cut bearings, and heavy internal wall bracing. The roof structure includes an arch braced side purlin roof. Features of the original construction visible inside include soffit tenons with diminished haunches to the floor joists. There are also remnants of the original window positions, with mortices indicating the former presence of diamond mullions, and two cross-entry doorways with Tudor arches.
