Description

The Toll House is an early 19th-century toll cottage located on Epping Road, North Weald Bassett. It was built by the Epping and Ongar Highway Trust around 1818. The cottage is brick, with a rendered finish and exposed dentils beneath the eaves. It has a roof of handmade red clay tiles, hipped on all sides. The building consists of two rooms aligned east to west, with a chimney stack in the middle of the eastern wall, and a rear wing extending to the north, creating a T-shaped plan. A flat-roofed extension was added to the north in the 20th century. The south elevation features a four-panel door and a single 20th-century metal-framed casement window.
