Description
Woodend Hall is a house dating back to the 16th century or possibly earlier. It is built with a timber frame and plastered walls and has a complex layout. The main part of the house is a long, rectangular range with gabled roofs covered in peg tiles. There is a lean-to addition on the northwest side and a large, two-story timber-framed rear wing, possibly of earlier origin, also with a peg tile roof. A separate lean-to roof also sits on the rear wing’s northeast side. The front elevation has four bays, featuring 19th-century double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and 3/3 panes. A modern, peg-tile-roofed porch has been added to the northeast end, containing a door, moulded jambs, a date panel, and bargeboards patterned with a guilloche design. This porch incorporates elements moved from an earlier porch dating to 1621. Other windows are a mix of older 19th-century casements and more modern replacements. The northeast gable displays "ashlared" plaster and suggestions of a raised roofline. A substantial Tudor-style chimney stack, situated where the main block and rear wing meet, features a wide, flat-arched fireplace in the hall bay. The house’s timber frame is substantial, with prominent jowls, and originally contained ovolo mullioned windows.
