Description
The farmhouse at Bury Farm dates back to the 15th century and features a timber frame with plastered walls and brick end walls. It has a peg-tiled, gabled roof and consists of four bays, with two additional bays added in the late 16th century that have a lower ridge line and are two storeys high. There is a 19th-century extension to the north. The two western bays contain a first-floor hall with soulaces on each rafter couple and a near-central cross quadrant crown post roof supported by curved braces to the tie beam. The other two bays have a crown post roof. The lower two bays on the eastern side have a collar purlin roof, with posts that feature long jowls. The farmhouse is situated on a moated site with infilled ponds. It was recorded by Morant in the History of Essex and in the Victoria County History of Essex, as well as in manorial records from the 15th century, where it was referred to as Epping Manor House until the 17th century. It served as a grange of Waltham Abbey from the 11th century until it was taken by the Crown in the 16th century.
