Description

House. Built in 1895 by Charles Eames Kempe and Walter B. Tower, Wood House is designed in a late 17th-century style, drawing inspiration from Sparrow’s House in Ipswich. The large, L-shaped building stands three storeys high with attics, presenting a substantial appearance to the garden front. The upper portion of the house is rendered over a stone ground floor, topped by a roof of red plain tiles. Four canted bay windows extend the full height of the garden front, each topped by gabled dormers. The two bays on the left feature windows with fifteen mullion and transom lights, under a further row of fifteen mullion lights. The two bays to the right have ten mullion and transom lights on both upper floors. Elaborate pargeting adorns the exterior, incorporating Ionic pilasters, swags, and panel ornament to the first floor, and swags and strapwork to the upper floors. Similar swags are found on the dormers. The chimneys are arranged in a grouped, diagonally placed layout. A sundial is located on the west elevation. The interior includes a reused fireplace dating from 1607, and 18th-century detailing is incorporated into the terrace.
