Description

The water tower at No. 35 High Street was built in 1872 by Jabez Church for the Epping Rural Sanitary Authority. It is constructed of red brick with grey and blue brick and stone dressings, featuring a square plan and a circular turret at the northeast corner. The tower stands 90 feet high and is designed in the Victorian Gothic style, incorporating details reminiscent of the 13th century.

At the base on the east elevation, there is a doorway with two boarded doors set beneath a four-centred rubbed brick arch, which is accented with decorative grey and blue bands and a key stone. The fanlight above the door is adorned with wrought iron scrollwork. Each facade has centrally positioned twin lancet windows, which are topped with two-centred arches made of banded grey and blue brick. Above these, each facade features a single central louvred lancet window with similar brick arch detailing. The turret includes two pairs of slit windows with stone cills and heads.

Throughout all facades and on the turret, there are string bands in grey brick with dentil courses at various levels. The top of the tower is finished with crenellated parapets that have stone dressings. An adjoining single-storey outbuilding, also in red brick with a slate roof, is located on the west elevation. The water tower is a prominent landmark visible from various points within the town and the surrounding countryside, and it holds group value as part of the local heritage.
