Description
The Ministry of Defence Building L141, known as the Sorting House, was built in 1889. It features English bond yellow brick with red brick bands and has brick-coped gables above a slate roof that covers a brick-vaulted roof. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey. There is an inserted concrete lintel over the doorway in the west gable end, which was originally served by an iron tramway. The north and south elevations have segmental brick arches over 4-light windows. This building is similar in design to the expense magazine L154. It is referred to in documentary sources as a "sorting house" and was closely linked to the manufacture of gunpowder and cordite, evidenced by its raised door that connected to the railway system.
