Description

The Lodge, also known as Ministry of Defence Building Number A221, is a house built for senior officers at the Royal Gunpowder Factory in the early 19th century, as it does not appear on the 1806 map. It is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, featuring wide overhanging eaves on a hipped Welsh slate roof with brick ridge stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high, with a symmetrical three-window front. There are one-storey service wings to the west, with the south-west wing altered after 1859. The north-west wing has been heightened and extended to the west, and there is a later infill block linking it to the south-west wing.

The front features a later central porch with a plat band and a gauged brick semi-circular arch over the doorway. There are gauged brick flat arches over 8/8-pane sash windows, and a later 19th-century bay window with horned sashes to the left. A similar bay window is found on the left-hand return, dating before around 1908. At the rear, there is a flat-roofed extension. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is known to include panelled doors, buffets in the southeast dining room, and possibly a reset dog-leg staircase with winders, stick balusters, and turned newels, as noted in a report by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England in 1993.
