Ministry Of Defence Building L170A At Tl 3778 0109

The Ministry of Defence Building L170A, located at the Royal Gunpowder Factory, was constructed in 1857 as an expense magazine. It features English bond brick with coped gable ends and a slate roof over a brick vault. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey. There is a raised doorway on the north side that was previously accessed by a railway on a trestle. This building is the earliest expense magazine on the site, with other expense magazines being L141 and L154. It was built to temporarily store gunpowder before it was transported to the northern part of the site for pressing, moulding, and drying. It is associated with buildings L168 and L176.
