Description

Walton House, also known as MOD Building No A200, is the superintendent's office built in 1789, with later 19th-century extensions. The building is constructed of Flemish bond red brick, with yellow brick extensions added in the 19th century, and features hipped slate roofs along with brick ridge and end stacks. It has a three-room rectangular plan, including a bay to the north that was added before the superintendent's office was established in 1789. The building was extended to the right of the front before 1821, with further 19th-century additions, including one around 1887 that created a U-shaped plan with a rear wing.

The structure is two storeys tall and has a late 18th-century or early 19th-century front with a three-window range. It features gauged brick flat arches above two 20th-century windows and a late 19th-century plate-glass sash on the ground floor, as well as above three six-pane sashes on the first floor. The stepped brick eaves add to its architectural detail. To the right, there is a two-window front from around 1860, with a timber lintel above a 20th-century door and flat gauged brick arches over six-over-six pane sashes. The rear extensions have similar arches over six-over-six pane and plate-glass sashes, along with a canted bay window to the right.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is known to include a late 18th-century box cornice and a cast-iron grate in the northwest room. The Waltham Abbey gunpowder mills were acquired by the government from John Walton in 1787. Walton House is part of a group with the contemporary buildings A201 and A202.
