Description
Netherhall is a ruined gatehouse that was part of a fortified house, mostly demolished, dating from the mid-15th century. It is constructed of red brick with white brick diapering and flared headers. The structure features two semi-octagonal towers with a gateway between them, rising three storeys high. The gatehouse has trefoiled corbelled parapets. At the rear of the former right-hand tower, there is an additional semi-octagonal projection that reaches the full height of the building, along with a staircase tower behind it.
The outer face of the left-hand tower has cruciform loops on the ground floor, as well as windows with four-centred heads and square labels. The right-hand side features square-headed windows and is topped with two chimney shafts made of spirally moulded brick, complete with moulded caps and bases. Between the two towers is the original outer arch of the gateway, which has moulded stone jambs and a four-centred arch within a square head. Above this arch are the remains of a square-headed stone window.
Part of the curtain wall on the right side still stands, while the remaining sides are only represented by foundations. The lower part of the north-west angle tower survives, featuring cruciform loops on each face. Foundation mounds of domestic buildings can be traced within the walls. Internally, on the left side of the gatehouse, three rooms remain on the ground floor, two of which have barrel vaults. The original circular brick newel stair has a sunk and moulded brick handrail. Surrounding the gatehouse is a rectangular moat with original brick revetments on the outer bank.
