Description
Weavershed House, formerly known as the Old Workhouse, dates from 1725 to 1835. After its closure, it was converted into several tenements, and its original elevations are largely still visible. The building is primarily early Georgian brick, featuring mouldings and enrichments, and is arranged around a courtyard. The structure has an L-shaped plan, with a simpler building on the north-east and north-west sides, and a more elaborate building on the south-east side, which likely served as the Masters' House.
The north wing of the L-plan building has two storeys and attics, with plastered walls on the first storey and brick walls on the ground storey. It features a jettied gable facing the street with restored exposed framing and casement windows. The roof is ridged, gabled, and covered with peg tiles. A large external red brick chimney stack with tabled offsets is located at the north-east return.
The wing parallel to the street is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, also with two storeys and three bays, and has a ridged, gabled, peg-tiled roof. It includes three gabled dormers with small-paned windows and eaves. On the first storey, there are two small-paned sash windows, with a central set of casements featuring two mullions and one transom. The front door is centrally located and has an elaborate cut-brick, rubbed lintel, with a pair of small-paned sashes on either side, all under straight arches with exposed boxes.
