Description
Barfields Almshouses, built in 1834, is a long range structure made of red brick with a slated ridged and gabled roof, featuring crosswings at each end. The building has three red brick chimney stacks along the ridge. The front elevation includes two doors, each with gabled porches, and there are two additional doors in the returns of the wings. A total of six pairs of round-headed windows are set under red brick arches along the front, featuring paned sashes and arched fanlights. The central four pairs of windows have dormer-gables adorned with fretted vergeboards and finials, as well as crested blue ridge bonnets that also appear along the ridge of the wings. The windows in the gables of the wings are topped with fretted roundels above and between their two lights, made from either terracotta or painted iron.
