Description
Essex Rose Cafe, formerly known as Corner Cottage Cafe, is a building dating from the 15th or 16th century. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with wings extending to the north and west, standing two storeys high with attics and roofs that are ridged, gabled, and covered with peg tiles. The front of the north wing is obscured by a shopfront that dates from around 1900. The ground storey has been remodeled for the cafe, while the upper storey jetties out along Mill Lane and showcases 18th-century window designs.
Inside, the first floor boasts a 17th-century plaster ceiling divided into two bays, adorned with embossed borders of acorns and a trail of oak leaves, along with units inspired by Tudor roses and moulded ceiling joists. The cooperative section has a south-facing front with a shop on the ground storey, topped by a parapetted red brick wall and a ridged, gabled peg-tiled roof. It features a range of four small-paned sash windows in exposed boxes beneath straight arches. Inside this section, there is a timber frame with roll-moulded first floor joists.
