Description
Woodlands is a 14th-century house located in Great Horkesley. It was originally designed as an aisled hall in an H-plan, featuring jettied crosswings and an exposed timber frame. The west front has cusped vergeboards, and there is a hollow moulded tie beam at the south-west gable. The existing windows are modern casements, with one over one in each crosswing. The north wing, dating from the 14th century, has splayed scarfs and a chamfered crown-post supported by straight braces. This wing consists of three bays and shows evidence of an original floor at attic level. It includes a binding-joist with three-quarter circle hollow mouldings and a tripartite window on the west side with ovolo mullions. The south wing, built around 1400, features one gabled dormer on the west slope of the hall, which was laterally divided around 1500. The gabled end wings have roofs covered with peg tiles. A red brick chimney stack is centrally located on the hall roof, with two additional stacks flanking the north and south of each wing.
