Description

This is a late 16th-century building with alterations made in the late 18th and 19th centuries, located on North Hill. The building, consisting of numbers 17, 18, 18A, and 18B, was originally listed as number 18 and known as Durlston House. It is constructed with a grey gault brick facade and has two storeys, attic space, and cellars. The original structure is timber-framed and plastered, with tiled roofs. The front features a nine-window range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars in simple reveals. There are two entrances, each with a flight of steps leading up to them. Number 18 has an 18th-19th century oriel window above the central doorway. Inside, the north room displays exposed studwork, and remnants of the earlier front with a projecting upper storey are visible in the front wall. Painted inscriptions decorate the tops of the walls in this room. The building is part of a group with numbers 13 to 29.
