Description

This is a mid-18th century property, originally built for Samuel Wall, an attorney. It comprises two houses located at 59 and 60 West Stockwell Street. The building is constructed of red brick with tiled roofs, hipped in the north and south sections, and features a single dormer window at the front. A parapet front incorporates angle pilasters and a slightly projecting central three-bay section topped with a pediment. A modillioned cornice runs along the top of the building, extending over the pediment. The fenestration consists of a 2:3:2 window range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The central windows on both floors are Venetian; the upper window has Tuscan columns and a moulded brick head, while the lower window has flat brick mouldings. Doorcases with open wood pediments, panelled reveals, and semi-circular fanlights are located on either side of the ground-floor Venetian window. The division of the building into two separate houses may have occurred in the later 19th century. Nos. 53 to 62, West Stockwell Street form a notable group.
