Description

St John's Abbey Gatehouse is the only remaining part of the Abbey of St John the Baptist, which was founded as a late Benedictine establishment in the 11th century. The gatehouse was constructed in the later 15th century and consists of two storeys made of rubble and brick, faced with knapped flint work set in stone panels that feature cusped heads. The front of the building has two octagonal turrets on either side, and the gate hall is topped with a ribbed stone vault roof. The rear section of the gatehouse was rebuilt in 17th century brick following damage sustained during the siege of 1648.
