Description
The Church of St Giles has origins dating back to the 12th century, with the south wall of the nave from this period. The chancel was added in the 13th century, while the nave and north aisle were constructed in the 14th century. A north chapel and south porch were added in the 16th century. The west tower, which is timber-framed and weather-boarded, dates from the 17th to 18th century. The church has undergone significant restoration in the 19th century and more recently. An interesting feature is a stone floor tablet, now located on the north wall of the north chapel, commemorating Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle, who were executed after the siege of Colchester in 1648. The building is no longer used as a church.
