Description

The ruins of the Priory Church of St Botolph date back to the mid-12th century and were part of the first house of Augustinian Canons in England, founded at the beginning of that century. The church was constructed mainly from stone and brick sourced from Roman buildings. Inside, there are impressive circular brick columns supporting the nave, and the west front features intricate interlacing arcades made of brick. The church continued to serve as the parish church of St Botolph's even after the Priory was suppressed in 1536. Unfortunately, it was left in ruins following the siege of Colchester in 1648.
