Description
Cockerills is a 14th-century house that features an H-plan layout with two jettied crosswings, both of which are gabled. The exterior is plastered, and the roofs are covered with peg tiles. The windows are leaded timber casements. The south crosswing has a doorway with diamond mullioned side lights and shutters that face the current hall. This wing consists of two bays, while the north crosswing also has two bays and a central partition, featuring a four-centred door head at the southwest angle that relates to the former stairs, of which the trimmer remains. This area served as a service wing. The hall is divided by a first floor, with cyma and hollow moulded joists that are soffit-tenoned from the 15th century. The central frame of the hall retains arch braces and a crown-post, and the south wing also includes a crown-post. There is evidence of a smoke bay located between the south end of the hall and the south crosswing. The building features scarfing edges that are halved and bridle butted.
