Description
30 Firs Chase is a house dating from the 17th century and later. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with a pitched tile roof and brick stacks. The layout consists of a one-room-deep, two-unit house with end stacks and a later service wing attached to the rear.
The exterior includes a heavy wooden door with long iron hinges positioned to the right of the center. There is a 20th-century porch and windows, while a 20th-century extension to the left rear is not of particular interest.
Inside, the ground floor has a chamfered spine beam with lamb-tongue stops on both sides of the central timber-framed partition and at both ends. The wall framing is exposed. A wooden staircase is located to the right of the center, encased in timber-frame, and features a two-panel door. The roof consists of three tie-beams with reinforcing collars, slender rafters, and no ridge board. The staggered tenoned purlins include one at the rear right with carved initials "J W C ook A K H". An additional two-panel door separates the attic space.
This large 17th-century house, along with its 18th-century service addition that remains a separate house to the rear, retains much of its original timber-framing and plan form within the historic fishing community of West Mersea.
