Description
The Old Vicarage is an early 18th-century red brick house located on Church Street in Great Baddow. It features a parapet on all four sides, which is swept up at the corners, and has a moulded and dentilled brick cornice on the north, east, and west fronts. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The north front includes a five-window range, while the south, east, and west fronts have a three-window range, all with double-hung sashes that have glazing bars in flush cased frames. The north front also boasts a central doorway framed by a Doric doorcase with panelled reveals, fluted columns, a triglyph frieze, and a modillion pediment. The roof is tiled and triple-pitched, featuring two pedimented dormer windows on the north, east, and west fronts, as well as one hipped dormer window on the south front. Inside, the house contains panelled rooms, one of which has a notable cornice, and there is a good 18th-century fire surround. The 18th-century staircase is characterized by cut strings and turned and moulded balusters. The Old Vicarage is part of a group that includes the Church of St Mary and several other nearby buildings.
