Description
The boundary wall at HM Prison was built between 1823 and 1826 and includes approximately 130 metres of wall facing northeast along Sandford Road, as well as sections of approximately 50 and 40 metres facing northwest along Springfield Road. The wall features seven stone buttresses with hollow chamfers on either side of the entrance and a stone corbel table top course. Both the northeast and northwest returns have bastions. The entire wall is stone faced, with rustications and blind, round-headed niches on each side, which have voussoired heads. There are pilasters on each return with 'arrow-slits', topped with a stone string and parapet. The northeast facing section is made of red brick in Flemish garden wall bond, featuring 18 semi-circular buttresses, each with a conical top, and a conical section to the brick coping. The wall was designed by Thomas Hopper.
