Description
Springfield Water Mill is an 18th-century undershot watermill that is timber framed and weather-boarded. It is a five-storey building with a single long range. The front elevation faces north and features four windows and two doors positioned near the center, though these have been much blocked and altered. On the first floor, there are three sash windows and two doors, one of which is central. The second floor has four sash windows and one central door. Most of the windows are small paned sashes, while the ground floor includes five windows and two doors. There is a jettied sack-hoist, known as a lucam, supported on knees. The roof is ridged and gabled, with slated eaves and paired modillions. The building has a rectangular plan. Inside, there is a great spur wheel with compass-arms on the up-and-down shaft made of heavy oak, likely dating from the 16th century. At the rear, there is an 18th-century office that is one storey with an attic, featuring a ridged and gabled roof, peg-tiled, and weather-boarded on the south gable.
