Description
The war memorial in Stock was designed by F A Wright and sculpted by Messrs Wray and Fuller. Made from Portland stone and bronze, the monument stands approximately 5 metres high. It features an octagonal base topped with an octagonal step, an octagonal plinth with scrolling buttresses, and a square column. On two side faces of the column, there are inverted bronze crusader's swords, while the upper faces are adorned with carvings of the Essex County badge, a thistle on a shield, a shamrock on a shield, and a rose on a shield. At the top of the column, there is a carved wreath, crown, and flags. The memorial is inscribed with the following: 'TO THE/ MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN OF/ STOCK/ AND/ BUTTSBURY/ WHO FELL/ IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918', and 'ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF 1939-1945', along with the names of those who died.
Funded by public subscription, the memorial was unveiled by Brigadier Colonel R B Colvin on 28 November 1920. Initially dedicated to the men of Stock and Buttsbury who died in the First World War, it was later also dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Second World War.
