Description

The war memorial stands at the junction of the A3400 and the B4439. Constructed in 1921, it was designed by Bateman and Bateman of Birmingham and carved by John White. The memorial is built from Portland stone and incorporates bronze gnomons to the sundials.

The design features a triangular, stepped plinth and base with chamfered corners, connected by volutes to a column. The column's base and capital display Renaissance motifs, including volutes and cherub heads. A triangular block above the column has sundials on each face, also with chamfered corners. The upper section tapers to a finial shaped like a seated lion. A sculpted garland of bay leaves is twined around the column, which exhibits entasis. The three sundial faces are individually shaped, each with a differently shaped bronze gnomon. Two sides of the base are inscribed with the names of the fallen. The third side bears the inscription “TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD/IN HONOURED MEMORY/OF THE MEN /OF THIS DISTRICT/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/FOR THEIR KING/AND COUNTRY/IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/AND IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945.” Carved above the three sundial faces are the phrases “THE DAYS WERE SHORT” and “THE WORK GREAT” and “THEIR TIME PASSED AWAY LIKE A SHADOW."

The memorial cost approximately £450 and was funded by a committee of subscribers; the site was given by the Chesshire family. It commemorates the men who died in the First World War and lived within a two-mile radius, covering the parishes of Lapworth, Nuthurst, Packwood and part of Tanworth. It is likely that C. E. Bateman, the senior partner in Bateman and Bateman, who was responsible for church designs, also designed this war memorial. The work was executed by John White and Sons, Sculptors, of Yardley. The memorial was unveiled by Colonel Sir William Bowater and dedicated by the Reverend Canon J.A.Binnie on 2nd April, 1921. The memorial is a design of distinct architectural quality and contributes significantly to the character of the village centre.
