Description

The road bridge over the London to Norwich railway line in Brentwood was built in 1840 for the Eastern Counties Railway Company. It is constructed from stock bricks in various colors, including yellow, red, and blue, arranged in English bond. The bridge is aligned north-south and is supported over a cutting by six brick piers. It features a semi-elliptical arch between the two middle piers and semicircular arches between the other piers. The two outer piers on each side have openings with semicircular arches, while the inner piers on each side have had their openings closed with brick at a later date. Weathered brick imposts are present, and on each side, there are eight projecting rectangular brick panels above the piers and abutments. The eastern side has a brick parapet that is approximately 1.5 meters above the tarmac road. On the western side, the parapet has been lowered to the level of a 20th-century steel footbridge, approximately 0.6 meters above the tarmac, and is finished with concrete coping blocks featuring exposed aggregate. A galvanized iron railing with cast stanchions and two tubular rails is mounted on top of the parapet. The road is named after this bridge.
