Description

Gatehouse Cottage is a house dating back to the 16th century, with later additions and extensions in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and has been plastered, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. It has four bays facing west, featuring an axial stack in the second bay from the right. An external stack is located at the left end, and is incorporated into an adjacent building. The front elevation has a slight obtuse angle, following the line of the street. A lean-to stair tower, dating to the 17th century, is located behind the main stack but no longer contains a staircase. An 18th century single-storey lean-to extension is behind the right end, and a 20th century two-storey extension is behind the left end. The ground floor has two 20th century casement windows, along with two 19th century horizontally sliding sash windows with eight and twelve lights respectively. On the first floor, there's one 19th century casement, two 20th century casements, and one small fixed light. A 20th century door provides access. A large stack has been reduced by five courses above the ridge. Inside, the building features jowled posts, curved tension braces trenched inside heavy studding, chamfered axial beams with run-out stops, plain joists of horizontal section, and two large wood-burning hearths.
