5/160 Clavering's 7.8.52 Farmhouse

House. Late C16 and later. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. Complex plan form comprising C19 long front range facing N, and a short parallel range and 2 blocks at right angles to rear, one of which is late C16. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 2 early C19 square sashes of 20 lights. First floor, 3 similar sashes and one of 16 lights over door. Off-centre early C19 6-panel door with reeded attached elliptical Tuscan columns, frieze with diamond recesses, and flat hood. Roof hipped. Traces of old pargetting on end flank wall. Jowled posts. 3 C17 internal doors, one with moulded planks. Early C19 staircase with stick balusters, handrail and spiral termination at newel, which leads to a landing with curved enclosing walls of the same period. Early C19 corner cupboard with thin pilasters, serpentine shelves and semi-domed recess, reported to have been moved from a cottage in the village. RCHM 2.
