Description
Clavering's Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 16th century and later. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The building has a complex plan that includes a long front range from the 19th century facing north, a short parallel range, and two blocks at right angles to the rear, one of which is from the late 16th century. The house is two storeys high.
On the ground floor, there are two early 19th-century square sash windows with 20 lights each. The first floor features three similar sash windows and one with 16 lights above the door. The entrance has an off-centre early 19th-century six-panel door flanked by reeded attached elliptical Tuscan columns, a frieze with diamond recesses, and a flat hood above. The roof is hipped, and there are traces of old pargetting on the end flank wall. The house has jowled posts and three 17th-century internal doors, one of which has moulded planks.
Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters, a handrail, and a spiral termination at the newel post, leading to a landing with curved enclosing walls from the same period. Additionally, there is an early 19th-century corner cupboard featuring thin pilasters, serpentine shelves, and a semi-domed recess, which is reported to have been moved from a cottage in the village.
