Description
Great Town House is a house dating from the 16th century, altered in the 18th century and extended in the 20th century. It has a timber frame, with parts plastered and parts faced with red brick in Flemish bond, and is roofed with slate. The building consists of four bays aligned northeast-southwest, with a northwest aspect. It features an internal chimney stack in the second bay from the southwest end and an external chimney stack at the northeast end. A two-storey extension was added to the rear in the 20th century. The house is two storeys high and has a door with six fielded panels set in a doorcase that has complex fluting on the jambs and lintel, topped with a shallow hood on brackets. Each floor has three double-hung sash windows with 16 lights, featuring flat arches made of gauged brickwork, dating from the 18th century, with some crown glass present. The facade is made of red brick and is asymmetrical. The roof has been rebuilt to a low pitch to accommodate the slate. Inside, there are plain-chamfered beams with step stops, and some beams are boxed in. A large wood-burning hearth has been converted into cupboards.
