Description
The Royal British Legion Club, originally a working men's club, was established in 1883. It was designed by George Sherrin for the workers of Samuel Courtauld's Townsford Mill. The building is in the Queen Anne style and constructed from red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a hipped tiled roof with a bellcote at the base and a shingled spire topped with a metal finial.
This single-storey structure has a front elevation that includes a projecting curved pediment with a datestone from 1883 and the letters SC&Co. Beneath this, there are two tall sash windows with horns and ovolo moulding, which are set under a shared apron. A moulded brick ovolo cornice and four swag panels adorn the front. To the left, there is a doorcase with brick pilasters, an entablature, and an arched opening that features a keystone and tympanum, decorated with carved roses and a central shield displaying SC&Co. The entrance consists of double doors.
The side elevation is also single-storey and has three cambered sash windows with aprons, separated by pilasters. There is a later one-storey extension at the rear that matches the original style.
